** It's important to note that there are many different types of annuities and some may be more beneficial than others depending not only on individividual financial goals, risk preferences, time horizon's, and other important factors unique to each client, but also depending on the interest rate environment and other external market factors. For example, we have found over the past couple of years that fixed indexed annuities are generally more beneficial to our clients than fixed annuities due to the current state of the interest rate environment.

  • Fixed Annuities: A fixed annuity is a type of annuity contract that allows for the accumulation of capital on a tax-deferred basis. In exchange for a lump sum of capital, a life insurance company credits the annuity account with a guaranteed fixed rate of interest while guaranteeing the principal investment. A fixed annuity can be annuitized to provide the annuitant with a guaranteed income payout for a specified term or for life.
  • Fixed Indexed Annuities: Indexed annuities offer annuitants the opportunity to earn higher yields based on stock market performance with protection against market declines. However, it is also common for an annuitant's yields to be somewhat lower than expected due to the combination of caps on the maximum amount of interest earned and fee-related deductions. The real challenge is in understanding how an indexed annuity works as it is much more complex than a standard fixed annuity – Many individuals attempt to research and understand all of the moving parts involved, but it’s important to meet with a professional to see how a fixed indexed annuity may fit into your overall financial plan.
  • Variable Annuities: A variable annuity is a type of annuity contract that allows for the accumulation of capital on a tax-deferred basis. As opposed to a fixed annuity that offers a guaranteed interest rate and a minimum payment at annuitization, variable annuities offer investors the opportunity to generate higher rates of returns by investing in equity and bond subaccounts. If a variable annuity is annuitized for income, the income payments can vary based on the performance of the subaccounts.
  • Immediate Annuities: Unlike the annuities mentioned above that normally defer and accumulate for few to many years prior to either being annuitized or withdrawn from, immediate annuities provide an immediate stream of income from a lump sum that's invested.

Traditional Investments: Many investors planning their retirement understand the need to balance annuities with other stock and bond portfolio options by purchasing additional investments.

Building a simple portfolio is not rocket science, and there are plenty of inexpensive funds out there that may help automate the process at a lower cost.

Allow us to provide a balance within your retirement portfolio. Most retirees will live years longer than they assume, and by adding stocks to their portfolio this might be helpful with the possible effects of inflation.

Alternative Investments: After the 2008 global economic meltdown investors and advisors learned that diversification of only mutual funds and traditional investments was not enough. It was realized that we had to find a way to earn “market-like” returns without 100% exposure to the market. This led to innovation and the creation of many types of Alternative Investments. We believe that Alternative Investments plan a crucial role in each portfolio as a hedge against traditional investments, but they do have their own risk characteristics which we discuss with each client.
